Cruises are ruined all over the world by people suffering from motion sickness. There are varying degrees of travel sickness that people can suffer but one thing that remains the same is how unpleasant it is. It can bring your holiday to and end pretty quickly and make you want to walk home. So what are the best ways to prevent you luxury cruises going wrong?

1.) Position of your cabin. When you make your cruise booking, make sure you mention to the agent that you get sea sickness and ask if they can help you out. More often than not they will be able to allocate you a cabin close to the ship’s centre. This will minimise the amount of movement that your cabin experiences, even on gentle river cruises and will dramatically reduce the chances of feeling ill.

2.) Eating ginger. Ginger has been used to combat travel sickness for thousands of years. It has within it a number of different natural chemicals that inhibit the gag-reflex of the stomach, there reducing your chances of throwing up. It will not get rid of your nausea feelings how, so you might need something else to combat this.

3.) Walking about. It sounds simple but it really can work. The unique movement that the brain experiences when on a boat is something it is not accustomed to and so it reacts badly. If you stay upright and walking around the boat for a while you will start to get your ‘sea legs’ and your brain will start to understand the movement and you’ll feel better

4.) Motion sickness tablets. This is a very popular technique that is often the best method for reducing nausea. Motion sickness tablets desensitise the brain and make it less receptive to movement, thus reducing its response of nausea. This is also why they can make you feel drowsy, so be careful taking them before swimming. To ensure that the chemicals are well circulated around the body when the ship leaves harbour, you should take your tablets at least 60 minutes before hand. This will prevent your travel sickness from getting a chance to build up at all.

Ships nowadays are sometimes fitted with very good motion stabilising systems, for an example of this please go to Oceania Cruise
